Brandenburg: a region full of diversity

A trip to Brandenburg is worthwhile whatever the time of year:

In spring you can explore the region’s many rivers and lakes by canoe, in summer enjoy a beach holiday on the shores of one of Brandenburg’s 3,000 lakes, in autumn take a cycling trip through picturesque countryside and forests, and in winter enjoy a long bracing walk followed by a relaxing dip in one of the region’s many thermal baths.

Or indulge in other sporting activities like golf, polo or horse-riding in the wide expanses of the Brandenburg countryside. And whatever the season, there are lots of palaces, medieval towns and museums to visit.

Historic Potsdam

Potsdam, the state capital of Brandenburg, is within easy reach of Berlin, and offers numerous cultural highlights. Unique in Germany, the cultural landscape comprising palaces, gardens and lakes was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1991. Probably Potsdam’s top attraction is Sanssouci palace and its expansive landscaped park.

The historic quarters of the town – the Russian Alexandrowka colony, the Dutch quarter and the former Bohemian Weavers’ quarter give Potsdam a distinctly European feel. Other special attractions include the Babelsberg Film Park, the Biosphäre tropical gardens, the public park on the former grounds of the 2001 National Horticultural Show, boat excursions, and the Bornstedt Royal Estate. The historic and cultural diversity of the Schiffbauergasse as well as the historic city centre of Potsdam round off Potsdam’s many tourist attractions.

Whatever the time of year: a visit to the McArthurGlen Designer Outlet combined with an excursion into the surrounding region is always worthwhile.

Sanssouci Palace and Park

Almost four hundred years ago, the rulers of Brandenburg-Prussia commissioned the best artists of their time to create a fantastic ensemble of palaces and gardens in the royal capital of Potsdam. In the 19th century, the landscape architect Joseph Lenné incorporated the palaces and gardens of Potsdam into a park landscape reaching from Sanssouci to the Pfaueninsel in Berlin. In 1990, UNESCO declared this unique cultural landscape a World Heritage Site. Today visitors can embark on a unique journey through the cultural, art and architectural history of Brandenburg-Prussia.

Sanssouci Palace

No other palace is so closely linked with the figure of Frederick the Great as the palace of Sanssouci. The name Sanssouci – without a care – can be understood as a leitmotif of the king, for it is here that he liked to withdraw from the world with his dogs. The palace is situated at the top of the famous vineyard terraces, and the palace’s rooms, with their original 18th-century interior decor, enable visitors to immerse themselves in the world of the philosophers of Sanssouci. The rooms are elegantly and sumptuously decorated.
